I help individuals be more of who and what they want to be

Richard Joseph Executive Coaching

My Personal Mission

In today’s fast-paced world individuals are having to work in an environment of increased demands, often with fewer resources, tighter time frames and more competition, while having to deal with constant change, and business as usual.

Trying to keep up by working longer, harder, and faster may be a short-term solution, but it is an exhausting position to have to maintain. That approach leads to ‘working harder, but hardly working’, which in turn leads to tiredness, fatigue and in some cases burn-out. Perhaps that is why New Zealand has one of the lowest labour productivity rates in the OECD countries, despite working longer hours than most.

My approach to executive coaching recognises the challenges people face in today’s organisations and supports them in dealing with those challenges, as well as being more productive, fulfilled and energised, by building on and further developing their strengths.

My Coaching Philosophy and Process

My coaching process is always customised to the individual. Diagnosis before prescription.

The first stage is an information gathering process. Each client is sent a questionnaire which provides a focus for the coaching and assesses their needs and desired outcomes.

We also discuss:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the coach and client

  • The client’s communication preferences

  • Establish a timeline and frequency of the coaching

  • Agree expectations and boundaries

  • Assure client of confidentiality

My coaching works best in face-to-face sessions, but can be delivered via Zoom or similar if necessary and appropriate.

30 Years of Executive Leadership Experience

I have an extensive background in management in both New Zealand and Australia. Following seven years in management roles in Australian Credit Bureaus, I returned to New Zealand to establish my own firm, Protocol Credit Bureau Ltd. After mergers with three other companies, it expanded to become CreditCorp Services Ltd, a public company with fourteen branches nationwide. As well as a Director, I was General Manager of Consulting and Education. I left CreditCorp to pursue my calling in the field of leadership training and personal development.

In 1991 I formed Richard Joseph & Associates Ltd, a management consulting company based in Dunedin, with a network of associates throughout Australasia and beyond. This company employed my philosophy in enhancing the performance of organisations by developing the potential of the people within the organisation. I sold that company in 2021.

I'm the author of the 3-day leadership programme Turning Point™* which has been run extensively throughout Australasia and beyond. This programme has proven so successful that it expanded into a suite of integrated development programmes. I have supported change management and individual & team development for a diverse range of clients including government organisations, large corporations, tribal authorities, schools, and small businesses.

I recently had the privilege of participating in one-on-one executive training sessions with Richard, and the experience was nothing short of life changing. Richard is that rare professional with the ability and willingness to work with both his client and their problem. Engaging with these two different but related aspects during consultations enables one to locate options and implement solutions, which previously were unrecognised. Richard’s invaluable insights facilitate achievement and the national recognition I received in 2021 from my peers in the legal profession, was in no small portion, the result of the partnership struck with Richard.

Richard's style of coaching is both respectful and empathetic. He is an excellent listener who facilitates and supports personal development, while allowing space for self-reflection when required. He also understands and accommodates individual differences in personality in a sensitive manner. By combining years of business experience with a theoretical grounding in evidence-based research, Richard provides invaluable assistance in helping his clients step forward and sustain greater self-awareness and personal growth

After our initial meeting I decided to select Richard as my leadership mentor and coach as I realised he had vast real-world experience and was extremely knowledgeable about the techniques and processes necessary to underpin developing as a good leader. Even though we came from different backgrounds, Richard’s advice was always relevant and invaluable, and importantly enabled me to cope with stressful situations and work through them. He also enabled wholistic real-life context understanding. Even though our working backgrounds are different, as I worked in the academic sector, Richard was always able to still demonstrate understanding, provide support and reinforce appropriate leadership approaches, he also had a calming and supportive influence. Richard was available in-between scheduled meetings to provide additional advice and support on particular issues I had ongoing. I would thoroughly recommend Richard as a leadership coach.

Richard helped me getting more clarity on my working style and how it might impact others around me. He did that by a continuous focus on my skills and strengths. His style is very personable and attentive, even outside of the regular appointments. Ultimately due to some of his comments/questions, he contributed to the identification of my neurodiversity

Natalie

Manager, early childhood centre.

Working alongside Richard during my coaching was equally challenging and rewarding, in both a personal and professional sense. Richard taught me how to look at myself in a way that I never had before; a way that others see me.

Richard's approach to his work is genuine, professional and respectful. There were some tough and confronting conversations, but I always felt safe in the way they were guided by Richard. I still refer back to our conversations during our sessions and ask myself – what would Richard say to me right now? It would usually be “Nat, if not now, when”? Thank you for the work you do Richard, anyone who takes the opportunity to work alongside you is making an excellent decision for their own personal growth.

Richard's manner is always calm and practical, making each session not only productive but also enjoyable. His wise counsel has been a constant source of support and guidance for me.
